Bowl-O-Cross – wow. Yesterday was another top day at the Holland Park Bowls Club. A tight, fun course designed by Brad Norman, weather that turned out to be perfect, a noisy crowd, good coffee, food and beer. Oh, and racing.
Bowl-O-Cross 2013 will probably be remembered as the day that Robbie McEwen made his cyclocross debut. That’s right, we organised a cyclocross race at a bowls club and one of Australia’s most illustrious cyclists turned up to ride. Robbie is officially the nicest bloke in the world. I could give examples, but what he said when he accepted his first place trophy says it all.
But Bowl-O-Cross was about the spirit of participation. Having a go and cheering on every competitor. Along with Robbie, it was Miles Maclennan’s first cyclocross race. For me, one of the highlights of the day was everyone cheering Miles, the youngest competitor, home over the finish line.
Other notable events included He-Man turning the bowling green into his own Castle Greyskull, Michael MacMahon competing in a skimpy white dress and Colleen South’s music delighting the crowd on her birthday.
Thanks to everyone for making it such a special day. You can re-live it through Flickr here.
Full race results will be available on the Queensland Cyclocross site, but here are some of the winners.
