Pushies Galore 2012

Pushies Galore 2012 has been and gone. We managed to “ride” out the weather. It started quite ominously, but by Sunday afternoon the sun was fully out. Based on gate takings, we reckon that 2,000 – 2,500 people turned up on Sunday to take part in the fun. It was so good, we’ve decided it to do it all again next year. Mark 13-14 July 2013 in your calendars. See you then!

14 July 2012

The Pushies Galore 2012 official launch was a tops night at the Holland Park Bowls Club. Bike enthusiasts got to listen to  special guests Mick Peel (Busyman Bicycles), Keith Marshall (Kumo Cycles), Andy White (Fyxomatosis) and Darrell McCulloch (Llewellyn Custom Bicycles) talk about what they do.

You can’t top beer and pizza. There was plenty of both on offer Saturday night. We were treated to a carefully selected beer list, courtesy of Matt Kirkegaard, matched up with wood-fired pizzas.  The night also saw the opening of the Frames photo exhibition, showcasing the splendid bike-related work of local photographers Hamish CairnsYan ChenJill PenridgeBennett RustDean Saffron and Jason Starr.

The night was soundtracked by the amazing Colleen South on piano. Who else can play the intro theme to Channel 9′s “Wide World of Sports” on the spot?

15 July 2012

Sunday morning was pretty grim. Grey skies, the odd drizzle. Not looking good. By the time the gates opened at 10am, though, we were hopeful. The trade stalls were in, the show ‘n’ shine was going off, the swap and sell was in full swing. Pushies Galore kicked into gear.

The trade stalls included:

Bicycle Queensland

Busyman Bicycles
Cooper Bikes
Cycle Designs Framepainting: Joe Cosgrove
Deadly Treadlys
Detailed Bike Co.
F Fast Cycling Club

In the swap area, deals were being cut left right and centre. Some bargains were had.

The kids’ parade brought the house down. With dressed-up bikes, the kids did two laps of the bowling green to rapturous applause.

Official Pushies Galore caffeine providores Kombi Koffein were there again, along with the Lions Club BBQ, wood-fired pizza and popcorn stalls. The Lions Club BBQ had a booming day – they got through 30kg of snags and made $850.

Local groups The Jason Recliners and Mama Juju entertained the crowd through the day, matching the relaxed vibe with their jazzy, bluesy tunes.

People’s commitment to the show ‘n’ shine this year was phenomenal. Track bikes from Rockhampton, vintage bikes from Toowoomba – they came from everywhere. It was particularly heart-warming to see so many Brisbane bikes in the “Made in BNE” category.

The winners for each category were:
