Over the past couple of years, I’ve been able to have some chats with Eric Hendren, framebuilder and second owner of Hoffy Cycles in Sandgate. I was lucky enough to be able to copy one of the order books that Eric kept at Hoffy Cycles, starting with frames built roughly around 1975. At the time, Eric told me that he had lost all of the other order books. The safe, he said, had been knocked off once from the shop. The books had unfortunately been inside.
Luckily for Brisbane bike historians, Eric has turned up two earlier books. The earlier book starts from 1939 to 1946, the second one from 1946 to 1965. You can see images from all three books here on Flickr.
These books got an airing at our Handpicked event prior to Pushies this year. It is very interesting to see the volumes that were produced. During the peaks of production in the 1960s, the frames aren’t being built for specific customer orders – they are being produced on mass just to meet customer demand. Cranking out 10 ladies roadsters in a week, like it ain’t nothing.
