It’s been a while since we organised a bike swap, so we thought we’d give people an opportunity to unload some goods. We’ve had swaps at food providers (Samios Foods, Coorparoo) and soccer clubs (Jack Speare park, home of the mighty Taringa Rovers.) Our venue this time round is a bit out of the ordinary.
Kurilpa Community Childcare Centre has been going since 1944, beginning as a result of the workforce demands placed on women during WWII. Located in West End, it has had thousands of little ones pass through its playgrounds. I’m a little biased (my 2-year-old son goes there) but Kurilpa is a very special place. You might have sampled some of their bake sale wares at last year’s Pushies Galore. The chocolate caramel slice is not to be missed.
The swap will take place in the centre’s carpark and we’ll open up the playground to give more space to sellers, buyers and kids of all ages.
Things will run much the same as usual. Here’s the low-down:
Date: Sunday, 1 March 2015
Time: 10am to 1pm
Location: Kurilpa Community Child Care, 136 Gray Road, West End
Cost: $5 for sellers, everyone else free
Food/drinks: coffee, sausage sizzle and cakes
Pre-register?: no just rock up
Is Pushies Galore still on?: Yes, this is just a swap. The full-on Pushies Galore event is on 12 July 2015 at Holland Park Bowls Club
The swap is the pulse of Pushies Galore. It’s like a Middle Eastern souq crossed with a flea market, plus a lot of bikes. There hasn’t been a swap in Brisbane for the last few months and people are getting toey for a chance to offload or pick up their bike items of choice.
If you need that seat post to finish of a build, if you want a new complete bike with history, or if you don’t need anything at all and just want that frame, this swap will meet your needs. It covers bikes of all persuasions, all shades of BMX to antique to modern road gear.
If you want to sell you stuff, get to Holland Park Bowls Club by 9:30am on the Sunday. We’ll open the gates then for all the swap stall holders. There’s no need to register beforehand and we have a strict “no trading before 10” before policy. For stalls it’s $5 walk-in, $10 for a car, $15 for a car + trailer. And there will be an ATM on site if you need to buy more parts than you expected.
It can be difficult to explain to the uninitiated what a bike swap actually is. For Pushies, I describe as like a flea market for bikes. It’s where people sell or swap their secondhand bikes and other accessories. This does the event a disservice though. It fails to acknowledge that deep human desire to discover hidden treasure, the chance of an out-and-out bargain.
Everyone has their own techniques: the quick early scan followed by in-depth analysis of possible hot spots, the end-of-the-day offer when sellers are desperate, or the buy the lot cheap and hope for some gold approach. Whatever the method, everyone loves talking up their scores at the end of the day.
We’ve also taken the step this year of putting an ATM inside the Bowls Club, just in case you really, really do need that frame.
If you’re planning to sell stuff, make sure you’re at Holland Park Bowls Club by 9:30am. Then it’s $5 for a space to hawk your wares. First in best dressed with spots. Happy treasure hunting.
This Sunday 14 April, No Frills Bike Swap in conjunction with the Bi-Monthly BMX Swap. Come along from 10am. It’s at 37/A Turbo Drive, Coorparoo. $5 to sell. No pre-rego. Rock up and secure your spot. Coffee and small goods will be on offer next door.
