The Queensland Cyclocross season has kicked off again for the year. Get your slice of bowls club/cycle sport fun on Sunday 24 May at Bowl-O-Cross 2015. This flyer, by the remarkable Smoke Creative, features perennial racer Daniel Angus with his daughter Eleanor, cutting it up at last year’s event.

Here’s all you need to know:

  • Date: Sunday 24 May 2015
  • Time: Noon to 5pm
  • Location: Abbotsleigh Street, Holland Park Bowls Club

The course will include grass, bitumen, and barriers, and maybe some mud. There are kids and adults categories.

Entrants will need a Cycling Australia or MTBA racing license. If you do not have a racing licence you can purchase a day license on the day for $20.

Enter on the day. No pre-registration.

All competitors will have at least two races. Then open grade will race twice in the same groups. The A/B grade riders will race a heat round, then be seeded for their respective final. Races will be 3-4 laps per race depending on the final course length. A rough guide to the afternoon will be as follows:

11:30am Registration open
12:30pm Registration closes
12:30pm Kids U7/U13
12:50pm Race 1 – U15 / Newcomers / Open Grade

Hay Bale Booth

On 15, May 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

During the races at Bowl-O-Cross over the weekend, a hay bale was placed in the middle of the course. In front of that hay bale was a tripod with a camera. Behind the camera was Mark. He took photos of the riders as they stopped mid-race. All of the pictures are up here on Flickr. Below are some highlights.

Bowl-O-Cross Wrap-Up

On 12, May 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

Bowl-O-Cross is all about participation, whether it be someone trying their hand at cyclocross for the first time, or an experienced rider competing against similarly race-hardened contemporaries. But we still keep track of who finishes first. Of particular note was the ding-dong battle between Robbie McEwen and young up-and-comer Jack Druery. The youngster pipped the champion sprinter at the post to take out the Full Whites Final.

We also staged a Mothers’ Day Cup. Riders were required hang out an item of washing and ice a cupcake in between laps. This special event was taken out by Daniel Corbett. An honourable mention should also go to probably the best name I’ve seen at a bike event: Mr Ernest Tyre.

A big thank you to all the riders for competing in such great spirit.

A quick thank you …

On 12, May 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

A more detailed race report is coming, but can I say a big thank you to everyone that made Bowl-O-Cross yesterday another fantastic event. Special mentions go to Brad Norman, Andrew Demack, Brisbane South MTB Club, the well-oiled registration unit, the whole extended Butler family, Brad’s Dad, Colleen the keyboard maestro, Michael the best stop-go-man in the business and, most importantly, all the Mums that turned out on their special day.

If you want to relive the weekend, #bowlocross is the hashtag to follow. I’ve plonked a few photos up on Flickr here as well.

Some highlights including Dan Angus teaching his daughter Eleanor how to gain an advantage, some riders requiring motherly assistance, the mid-race photo booth, Hicksy killing it for one lap on a BMX and a thrilling end to the “Full Whites” final.

Licensed to ill

On 07, May 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

This weekend sees Bowl-O-Cross enter its second year. While most Cyclocross events, and most two-year-olds, encourage a fun atmosphere, Bowl-O-Cross takes fun to the extreme. There will be varied events all with different formats and obstacles.

Cyclocross attracts many new/casual riders who are unsure if they want to race. If you come along and just want to ride your bike for giggles, you can. By entering the Barefoot category you can be as casual as you like. To ride the Barefoot category you will need a minimum of a participation license. MTBA rules are clear for the use of these licenses: ride only. There are no prizes for places, only prizes for best dressed, most inappropriate bike or whatever else you impress us with.

For those who want a crack at Robbie’s title, you can. Normal license rules apply. A MTBA, Road, BMX or day race license is required. Enter the Full Whites category and race like crazy, just remember everyone is having fun, you should too.

Registration is open from noon to 12:45pm.

Thanks Mum

Bowl-O-Cross is on next weekend, as it happens, on Mother’s Day, and we have a few exciting things in store. First is a tight and exciting course laid out by Mr Queensland Cyclocross, Brad Norman.

Second, a cyclocross race isn’t official until you add beer. The good eggs at Green Beacon Brewing in Newstead will be bringing out a keg of their 3 Bolt Pale Ale, “a flavoursome session ale, best drunk young and preferably in the presence of the brewer.” Running at 30 IBU, it will be hard on the quench.

Third, dressing in ludicrous attire is thoroughly recommended. As a gent, have you every wondered what it would be like to ride a bike in an elegant ladies pant suit? Why don’t you give it a try. Have a peek at last year’s photos for some inspiration.

Program and registration details are outlined here, but the rundown is basically as follows for Sunday 11 May:

  • 12:00 – registration
  • 12:30 – kid’s event
  • 12:45 – registration closes
  • 13:00 – heats
  • 14:00 – relay and novelty events
  • 15:00 – finals
  • 16:00 – presentations

There are three broad categories:

  • Jack High – kids, split off into U13 and U17 categories ($5 participation licence + $5 rego)
  • Barefoot – for cross virgins, the social rider, the larrikin ($5 participation licence + $10 rego)
  • Full whites – for those in it to win it ($20 race licence, if you need it + $10 rego)

All the latest news at hand will be on this Facebook event page for Bowl-O-Cross as well.

See you at the Holland Park Bowls Club on 11 May.
