Oh what a night

Setting up the bikes for the Night With Greg Softley was quite an exercise. Rob Cobcroft has detailed the exercise extremely well on his blog. To give a preview of a video in the works that will document the whole night, have a gander at this time lapse video of the bike preparations, as put together by the talented Baxter.

What a night

On 12, Jul 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings, Lovely Bikes | By Gavin Bannerman

We wanted to run a special night in the lead-up to Pushies. A chance to look at amazing bikes and shoot the breeze. We did that and then some last night. Greg Softley gave an overview of his collecting and then took a tour around the 13 bicycles he had on display.

A Molteni ridden to a win in the 1968 Giro that was then stripped away due to a positive drug test (or the rider getting a tow, depending on who you ask.)

Each bike had a story – some had been raced, some had been conceived as show pieces – and brought out a bag of goodies, including a Cambio Corsa shifting system and a gold-plated ICS Campganolo crankset, with inlaid with Swarovski crystals. The selection of bikes and components was immense; I’ll let some of the photos tell the story.

A big thank you to Greg for being so generous with his knowledge and letting people see these amazing pieces of technology. We are truly grateful to Crankstar for being the hosts with the most. The guys from Work-Shop by MGDC kindly rushed in their latest prototype bike stand to support Greg’s Cinelli Laser Strada. And last of all, thanks for everyone that turned up to enjoy these special bikes.

You can catch up with Greg at Pushies Galore on Sunday, but these bikes won’t be there.

On the Menu

After every Pushies we do a small debrief and ask ourselves, “what next year?” What’s going to be the new thing we can do to keep things interesting?

We’ve always liked the feeling of the night events we’ve held: Handpicked last year and the launch event in 2012. It gives an opportunity to get a bit dressed up, have a bit more of a chat and see a few special bikes in real detail. Compared to the all-in colour and buzz of the Sunday, these night soirees give us a bit of breathing space, the chance to have a few drinks in good company.

So for 2014 we’ve tried to make it extra special. Greg Softley’s 10 carefully-selected bikes will form an impressive display. I’m holding back on giving the entire list, just to keep an element of surprise. But if you think words like “Colnago”, “Arabesque”, “Laser”, “Galomozzi”, “ICS”, “Stucchi” and “Anniversary”, you get the picture. In addition to complete bikes, Greg will be presenting some other landmark pieces of cycling history: prototype components, early gear systems and several technological one-offs.

This Friday night will involve an exclusive viewing and in conversation session with Greg. Each of these bikes has a back story. This will be a chance to hear them straight from the source. Throw in some good food and drinks and it should be a good night.

Tickets for the event are still on sale. We will need to know final numbers very soon for catering, so either book your ticket online or buy in-store at Crankstar.

One night only

On 02, Jul 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings, Lovely Bikes | By Gavin Bannerman

Things are falling into place nicely for the night with Greg Softley and his bikes on Friday 11 July. A few people have asked whether the bikes will be out again on Sunday. The answer is no, this is the only chance over the weekend (and possibly your life) to see these 10 bicycles.

Those on various social media platforms may have seen the teasers pics so far, but here’s some titillation for everyone else.

Colnago

Laser

Bob Jackson

Benotto 004

So if Cinelli Lasers, gold-plated Colnago Mexicos etc are your go, make sure you book your ticket here or in-store at Crankstar. You won’t want to miss this.

The night will consist of a showing of Greg’s most prized bikes, an “in conversation” session and questions from the floor. A drink to get you started and food through the night is included.

A special collection

On 21, Apr 2014 | No Comments | In Lovely Bikes, The Big Day | By Gavin Bannerman

We’ve had this in the works for a little while now. We are very excited to announce that on Friday 11 July (the Friday before Pushies Galore) we have a very special event to kick off the weekend.

Greg Softley is a bike collector of world renown, particularly in the area of Italian road bikes. His collection is truly astounding: an insight into cycling’s technological advances through the years.

Greg will very kindly be presenting 10 of his most prized bikes at Crankstar Bespoke Cyclery.

More info, including ticket details, coming soon.
