Kurilpa Swap

On 01, Mar 2015 | No Comments | In Happenings, Lovely Bikes | By Gavin Bannerman

It’s hard with weather – the price for not getting rain is sometimes scorching sun. The No Frills Bike Swap today certainly was on the warm side. Despite the heat, it was a great day. This was our first West End event and the first at this venue: the Kurilpa Community Childcare Centre. I’m biased, my son Vincent goes there, but I think the centre has a remarkable feel to it. It’s relaxed, it’s welcoming, it’s fun.

There was a big turn out – 22 stallholders and plenty more buyers – rolling throughout the morning and into the early afternoon. The sausages and iced coffees were a hit, the cakes hit their mark and water was in constant demand. How often do you get to set up a swap stall in a playground?

There were plenty of frames walking out with new owners, lots of transactions being made. It will be good to see how many new builds pop up at Pushies Galore in July as a result.

A big thank you to Kurilpa for letting us use their space, thank you to the sellers (particular Peter McLennan who drove up from Grafton) and thanks to everyone that came along to join in the fun.

No Frills Bike Swap

On 25, Feb 2015 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

No Frills Bike Swap 2015 flyerThis Sunday sees another No Frills Bike Swap – on at Kurilpa Community Childcare from 10am to 1pm. In order to make things as smooth as possible, we encourage sellers to arrive at 9:30am (with no selling until 10am.) In order to fit as many sellers into the space as possible, people won’t be able to park their cars in the swap. It’ll be a case of come in, drop-off, park the car around the corner.

The childcare is at 136 Gray Road, located in a cul-de-sac. If you’re driving to the venue, the best way to come at it is from Montague Road or off Dornoch Terrace. If you’re riding or walking there, you will see there’s a sneaky side path off Dornoch Terrace, and there’s a footpath off Barnsely Street which allows access from the Boundary Street end.

Signage will be up on the day to direct you. Parking will be at a premium, so we’d encourage you to ride if you can. It’s shaping to be a really good day of people wanting to sell bike parts, people wanting to buy bike parts, and some people just wanting a fun day out among bikes.

Swap Sans Frills

On 09, Feb 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

Today saw the biggest turnout yet at the SE Queensland BMX/No Frills bike swap collaborations. A good sprinkling of old school BMX, some vintage gems and classic road gear. There were so many stallholders, it had to spread along all three sides of the building. This will be the last swap at this venue, so it was good to send the “old girl” (if you can call a warehouse that) a good send off. A big thanks needs to go out to Theo for being the host with the most.

A lot of people used the swap to acquire bits for their build-off bikes. Remember to document your build on the Pushies Build-Off forum.

A Fresh Start

On 02, Feb 2014 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

2014. A new year. You could take it many ways: a chance to de-clutter or as an opportunity to finally build up that bike  you have lying in parts. Either way, the No Frills Bike Swap happening this Sunday will assist you.

It will be a big occasion: the first swap of the year, the last swap at this site. Held in conjunction with the South-East Queensland Bi-Monthly BMX swap, there will be a little something for everyone.

The swap will be an ideal opportunity to source parts for the Pushies Galore Build-Off.

On 9 February, 37a Turbo Drive, Coorparoo (Samios Foods). Kicks off at 10am. $5 a stall.

Another kind of smallgoods

On 13, Oct 2013 | 3 Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

Set in the carpark of a smallgoods company, today’s swap makes me want to buy halva as much as headsets. The mashing of BMX, road and vintage swappers continued with the No Frills Bike Swap jumping on the back of the bimonthly SE Queensland BMX swaps. Highlights included some tidy vintage frames being snapped up (2 Star, Vitus etc), the usual little bargains (Look Keos $10), Adrian and Daniel selling truckloads of nice road gear, with Adrian duly spending his proceeds on his neighbour’s Tamari. Was a good day with plenty of brisk trading. Will be another one early next year.

No Frills Bike Swap

On 09, Oct 2013 | No Comments | In Happenings | By Gavin Bannerman

It’s been a while between between posts (and events.) This Sunday, come along to another collaboration with the SEQ Vintage BMX Swap Meet. There will be road, vintage, other bits and a whole lot of BMX. Get along to 37/A Turbo Drive, Coorparoo (it’s in the Samios Foods carpark) from 10am. Snags will be presenting the new best fitness tracker for cycling so if you are interested just go there.

Bathurst is on that day too. But just to remind everyone that weekends riding bikes are better than weekends watching cars, he’s a little video put together by Pushies friend, Dean Saffron. See you Sunday.
